Yeshiva Aharon Yaakov/Ohr Eliyahu in Culver City and its principal, Rabbi Shlomo Goldberg, received national recognition recently for being an institution that values individualized education, promotes skill building and emphasizes character development. Torah Umesorah, a 60-year-old national umbrella organization for 675 Orthodox day schools, awarded the school the Hersh Potok Memorial School of the Year Award and Goldberg received the Maurice and Goldie Rothman Award for Outstanding Educator. The two prizes are rarely awarded to the same institution in one year, making this honor even more meaningful. “When you have someone from the outside offer recognition, it gives everyone the confidence that, with God’s help, we’re going in the right direction,” said Goldberg, who has been at the helm of the school since it moved to its current location 10 years ago. Tucked unassumingly into the hills off La Cienega Boulevard on a lush four acres, the preschool-through-eighth-grade campus has 260 students. With individualized programs from inclusion specialists to enrichment resources, the school sets varied avenues of success so children can feel they’ve accomplished their goals. The arts and physical education play important roles in the curriculum, as does extensive programming to build interpersonal kindness and societal responsibility. “The mission of the school is to inspire a love of learning in each child,” Goldberg said. “We are trying to create a nurturing, secure place where children can grow up with refined midot [characteristics] and become b’nai and b’not Torah [sons and daughters of Torah].” For more information on Yeshiva Aharon Yaakov/Ohr Eliyahu, call (310) 559-3330. |
