Mussar Thoughts!

Despite all of the potentially evil motivations that one could attribute to the actions of Korach and his followers, Chazal seem to find only one,   seemingly    minor   fault   in Korach’s dispute—it was not completely leshem shomayim, for the sake of heaven.  As Rav Yeruchom Levovitz, the great Mashgiach of the Mir Yeshiva concludes from the Mishna in Avos, except for this element of “lo lishma,” the machlokes of  Korach with Moshe would have been similar in its kedusha to that of the great Torah disputes of Hillel and Shammai.  Korah sought kedusha, closeness to HaShem, and a relationship that did not require Cohanim as intermediaries.  He saw that within his spiritual DNA was the potential to give rise to a Shmuel HaNavi.  Were it not for some element of personal prejudice that tainted the purity of his motivation, the inherent kedusha of his action would exist until this day.

Still, with all of Korach’s greatness, it must be considered how it is that he seemingly did not consider the possibility that he was not acting completely for the sake of heaven?  Surely, he must have fulfilled the recommendations of Chazal and our great Baalei Mussar to search the depths of his motivations before he acted.  From this, Rav Yeruchom derives a great practical insight relevant to all.

Indeed, Korah did consider that he may have possessed some personal prejudice involved in his decision.  But he also knew that Chazal teach that one must always first involve himself in Torah and mitzvos “ shelo leshma”, for personal gain, because from this less than ideal beginning, there will eventually arise an ability to learn and perform for only the highest motivations, leshem shomayim.  Korach’s mistake was that he believed that this principle of “betoch shelo leshma, ba leshma,” applied to machlokes, too.  The

Parasha named for him comes to teach us that machlokes is the singular exception to this rule.  Unless one is sure that his motivations are 100% purely for the sake of HaShem and His Torah, he is not allowed to pursue a machlokes even for the sake of a mitzvah.

Text Box: 6B and Yesod Boys
Together Again

Mrs. Jalakian and Miss Kurtzman’s Cross-Age Mentoring Program sadly had their last project together on Wednesday of this week. A second, extremely exciting scavenger hunt, organized by 6b, began as a race against the clock for the Yesod boys to find each clue and reach the end of the course. The Yesoders cooperated and listened terrifically while their 6th grade buddies shadowed them as they traversed the yard, the auditorium and the field. Fortunately, all went smoothly as all the clues were eventually located. Finally, the boys made their way back to the classroom, where the younger boys received prizes.
